Why did you want to be on the Board for Active Gloucestershire?
I wanted to utilise my skills to give something back to the local community
Why is being an advocate for physical activity important to you?
Whilst physical activity was never a significant part of my younger life, I’ve started to really appreciate the positive impact of it has on my wellbeing. This takes the form of Fun Netball league, general fitness classes and the occasional more strenuous challenge. I’ve also directly seen the positive impact it’s had on my children’s lives and feel passionately that helping others become and stay active will bring them feel better and live longer.
Tell us a bit more about you:
I grew up in Gloucester and after a short time away at University and in the early years of my career, I returned to the county when I had children.
My spare time is now dominated by early morning walks with my lockdown Labrador, Coco. I’ve got 3 children, now mostly grown up but I still spend a good deal of time transporting and watching them pursue their sporting endeavours.
Tania Jane Hamilton (People Lead)
Active Gloucestershire Board Member
Job role: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) and Owner and Director of Hamilton’s HR LTD; HR Specialist and Consultant.
Why did you want to be on the Board for Active Gloucestershire?
I wanted to put my time, passion, energy, connections and my professional and lived experience, to play a small part in making a difference to people’s lives, wellbeing and health. Active Gloucestershire was the right place for this.
Why is being an advocate for physical activity important to you?
I have always been passionate about sport and physical activity but wanted to inspire people to move more. I want to help make sport and physical activity accessible to everyone, especially those who sometimes think of sport and physical activity as a luxury, and not necessarily aimed at them.
Tell us a bit more about you:
I am a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD in HR, and was the first black HR professional on the senior leadership HR team at a county council. I am now the owner and Director of Hamilton’s HR LTD; HR Specialist and EDI Consultant. I am also the main carer for my elderly parents, an ACAS trained workplace Mediator, a Mental Health First Aider as well as my role as a Trustee for Active Gloucestershire’ where I focus on diversity and inclusion, having recently collaborated on the implementation of the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan there and was a nominee for “Saluting Our Sisters” which was the theme of the Black History Month 2024.
I am not afraid to confront discrimination and I challenge those who are resistant to inclusion to ask themselves, “Is it dangerous, or just different?” when they appear hesitant to embrace diversity and inclusion. My favourite John James quote, “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, say something, do something, get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble.”
In my spare time, I raise money for charity by running marathons (including London and New York), I am a classically trained Singer and sing in a band and I am the proud Godmother to four amazing Godchildren.

Why is being an advocate for physical activity important to you?
I believe that physical activity should be accessible for all. Whether we choose to be active on our own or with others it not only makes us feel good and positive but helps maintain our good health and our well-being. My work life is very desk based and I try to ensure that during my work day I make time to get up and about. I will walk around the office or town as a break, or if at home make sure that I go out for a walk or even pop out a do a spot of gardening. I love being in the outdoors and any opportunity I get to run, walk, hike or cycle, especially with other people, I take, as it helps me unwind and generally feel good about myself whatever has happened in my day. I have seen the change it can bring in others too when they are able to access physical activity, how it can re-energise and as well as relax.
Tell us a bit more about you?
I have lived in Gloucestershire for over 26 years with my husband and 2 children. I qualified as a Solicitor in 1996 and have over 28 years’ experience specialising in all aspects of family law and am a member of the Law Society Children Law Panel which enables me to work with families – parents and young people – in public law proceedings where there are child protection and safeguarding concerns.
As Managing Director of WSP Solicitors, I care about the people I work with and want to make a difference for them so they can make a difference for our clients and am always looking at how we can improve our own pathways and experience to better everyone else’s.
I have previously been a governor and trustee of a Multi-Academy Trust and a trustee of a Fostering Agency whose purpose was to create bright futures by connecting young people with foster carers and enabling them to have better futures.
I am a strong advocate for developing and enabling people to become the very best of themselves, so they can thrive and feel good about what is happening in their lives.
As a family we have spent much time together walking and hiking both in the UK and abroad with our beautiful, friendly labrador, Violet. I do set myself challenges, having run numerous half marathons, the London marathon, the Great North Run and various Santa Runs, raising much needed funds for various charities, as well as walking challenges such as the Five Valleys Meningitis Now Walk & the Ultra Challenge 72km Thames Path Walk.

Job role: Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise at the University of Gloucestershire and academic course leader for the Sport, Coaching and Physical Education degree.
Why did you want to become a Board member at Active Gloucestershire?
I have got to know the staff and work of Active Gloucestershire through my role at the University of Gloucestershire (UoG) and it was clear from those interactions that it is a special Active Partnership that clearly achieves the positive change it sets out to, so it is a privilege to be on the board. In addition, I am from Gloucestershire and have always been passionate about engaging people in physical activity so being a board member at Active Gloucestershire seemed like a natural fit.
Tell us a bit more about you?
I am from Gloucestershire and moved back to the county when I completed my teacher training and I went on to teach in a local secondary school. Subsequently, I went part-time in my teaching role and completed my PhD at the University of Winchester, leading to roles in HE teaching. Finally, I moved into academia full-time and have had a range of roles at different institutions before heading to UoG in 2020. This role has allowed me to work with various organisations to ensure the research we conduct within the university has outreach and impact.
I have retired from team sports but very much enjoy the outdoors. You will often find me walking the hills trying to wear out my springer spaniel or paddling along the rivers when the levels allow.
