Schools across Gloucestershire celebrated awards last night for encouraging and increasing physical activity in schools. The ten awards, organised by Active Gloucestershire, were presented by Thinus Delport, retired rugby professional, at Cheltenham Town Hall.
Active Gloucestershire, a county-based charity with the mission ‘everyone active in Gloucestershire every day’, runs a series of year round activity programmes, including the Gloucestershire School Games and The Daily Mile. It is run in partnership with Hartpury College and University Centre. Over 85% of all primary, secondary and special schools participated in the 2017/2018 competition. Awards ranged from ‘Young Leader of the Year’ to ‘The engagement of all young people in physical activity’.
Deborah Potts, CEO of Active Gloucestershire said “with a quarter of those over 16 in England1 being inactive, and obesity levels increasing2, this programme with schools is very important in establishing good behavior early on. The Active Schools Awards 2018 are run to acknowledge and highlight schools and individuals who are innovative in their approach, and invest more time and effort in encouraging activity.”
